How Crimson Desert Best Skills and Abyss Artifacts Work

Crimson Desert has no experience levels. Instead, your character Kliff progresses through Abyss Artifacts, which function as skill points. You spend them in three skill trees organized by core stat: Health (red), Stamina (blue), and Spirit (green). Each tree branches into combat abilities, passive upgrades, and stat boosts.

Skills unlock in two ways. Most are purchased directly with Abyss Artifacts from the skill menu. A few require the “Watch and Learn” mechanic, where you observe an NPC or enemy using the ability in combat. Stay at a distance and avoid taking damage during observation, or your progress resets. Flight, one of the strongest traversal skills, is locked behind this system.

These are the skills that make the biggest difference in fights, ranked by priority.

Keen Senses (Green Tree)

The single most important skill in the game. Level 2 unlocks Perfect Dodge, which slows time when you dodge at the exact right moment. Level 3 adds Counter, letting you punish enemies immediately after a successful parry. Max this before anything else. Every boss fight becomes dramatically easier once you have Dodge and Counter available.

Armed Combat (Blue Tree)

Your primary offensive tree for sword and shield combat. Each point increases base melee damage. The real value is in the unlocks: Evasive Slash lets you attack while dodging, Rush closes gaps on fleeing enemies, and Charge delivers a heavy forward strike. At Level 5, you unlock Quick Swap for instant weapon switching without the radial menu.

Forward Slash (Blue Tree)

The strongest traversal ability in the game, but you cannot purchase it. You learn Flight by observing an NPC using it in the world. Abyss Artifacts come from multiple sources. Spread your farming across all of them.

• Combat kills — a progress bar fills on the minimap as you fight. When it completes, you earn one Abyss Artifact
• Main story quests — guaranteed rewards at story milestones
• Sealed Abyss Artifacts — purple cubes found along roads and at cairns. Each one has a combat challenge (like “kill 3 enemies with a sword within 30 seconds”). Completing the challenge rewards a regular Abyss Artifact and sometimes an Abyss Gear
• Abyss Cressets — hidden fast travel nodes in Ancient Ruins that reward Abyss Artifacts when activated

Sealed Abyss Artifacts are the most efficient source since they also grant Abyss Gears as bonus rewards. They appear as purple icons on your minimap when you are close. Use the Guiding Light sword ability (L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox) to reveal nearby sealed artifacts and Abyss Nexus nodes with a blue glow.

Abyss Gears and Cores

Abyss Gears are socketable items that buff your weapons and armor. You unlock the system in Chapter 3 after gaining access to the Witch faction and the Witch’s Lair vendor.

You can fully reset your skill tree at any time using a Faded Abyss Artifact. Open the Skills menu and hold F (keyboard), X (Xbox), or Square (PlayStation). All spent Abyss Artifacts are refunded and every ability resets.
