This Crimson Desert abyss gear tier list ranks every gear in the game alongside the 30-plus unique weapons they arrive on. Each weapon hidden across Pywel has different attack stats, abyss gears, and acquisition methods. Standard weapons share similar base stats after reinforcement, but unique weapons come pre-loaded with abyss gears that define how they perform in combat. This tier list ranks every unique weapon and every abyss gear separately so you know which ones to chase and which ones to strip for parts.
Key Takeaways
- Fated Shadow and Soul Spear dominate S tier: Fated Shadow (ATK 25) comes with Greysoul Howling for phantom strikes on Turning Slash. Soul Spear (ATK 27) has the highest attack stat in the game and fires spectral projectiles.
- Abyss gears matter more than weapon stats: base stats equalize through reinforcement. The abyss gears attached to unique weapons are what separate a trophy from a build-defining weapon.
- Frozen Anguish and Darkbringer are the strongest early grabs: both are available before Chapter 5 through exploration and come with three abyss gears each, making them immediate power spikes.
- Momentum and Crow’s Pursuit are the strongest standalone abyss gears: Momentum gives +35% Turning Slash damage from an armor slot, and Crow’s Pursuit summons crows on heavy attacks for consistent crowd damage.
How We Ranked
Unique weapons and abyss gears are evaluated on different criteria because they serve different roles. A weapon is only as good as its total package. An abyss gear is judged on its own merit since you can extract it and socket it into any compatible equipment. New weapons keep arriving in patches, so our breakdown of what’s new in Crimson Desert since launch is worth a look for the latest additions.
Unique weapon criteria:
- Attack stat compared to other weapons of the same type
- Quality of attached abyss gears and how many come pre-loaded
- Secondary stats like critical rate and attack speed levels
- Availability and how early you can obtain the weapon
Abyss gear criteria:
- Combat impact when socketed into any weapon or armor piece
- Versatility across different builds and playstyles
- Scaling into endgame content and boss fights
One thing to keep in mind: you can extract abyss gears from unique weapons at any Witch and socket them into different equipment with no penalty. A C-tier weapon with an S-tier abyss gear is still worth grabbing. For a breakdown of how each weapon type performs in combat, see our Crimson Desert best weapons guide which ranks greatswords, spears, bows, and every other weapon type.

S-Tier Unique Weapons
These are the strongest unique weapons in Crimson Desert. Each one combines high attack stats with powerful abyss gears that give them a clear edge over everything else in their weapon class.
Fated Shadow (One-Handed, ATK 25) is the strongest one-handed weapon in the game. It comes with Greysoul Howling, which adds phantom strikes to your Turning Slash for a massive DPS increase on every combo. You get it in Chapter 9 after defeating the Goyen boss. Head to the back of the arena, go up the stairs, and find it in a cave room. The weapon requires zero investment after pickup since Greysoul Howling carries it on its own.
Soul Spear (Two-Handed, ATK 27) has the highest raw attack stat of any weapon. Its built-in spectral projectile ability fires multiple damaging orbs in an AoE pattern on a 10-second cooldown, giving it both melee power and ranged burst. Find it at the Antumbra Ritual Grounds inside the Tomb of Frozen Souls in the Argent Peaks region. You need to jump and glide across platforms inside the mountain to reach it.
Vessel of Dark Pursuit (Two-Handed, ATK 25) comes with Wound of Darkness, a dark energy enhancement that adds AoE damage to your attacks. You get it by defeating the optional boss Antumbra’s Sword at the Sanctum of Absolution, southwest of Hernand. The boss fight is tough, but the weapon competes directly with Soul Spear for endgame two-handed builds. It also comes with Destruction I for extra attack.
Frozen Anguish (Two-Handed, ATK 25) matches Vessel of Dark Pursuit on raw attack and comes with three abyss gears: Stamina Transference, Gale I, and Destruction I. Stamina Transference lets you sustain an aggressive playstyle without running dry, while Gale I and Destruction I provide speed and damage. Find it in a treasure chest at the bottom of the Spire of Frost in the Dead Fire Mountains near the Pailune-Demeniss border. Available before Chapter 5, making it one of the strongest early-game grabs in Crimson Desert.
A-Tier Unique Weapons
A-tier weapons are strong picks that either have excellent abyss gears, high stats, or both. They fall just short of S tier because of lower raw numbers or more limited active effects.
Righteous Verdict (Two-Handed, ATK 23, Crit Lv. 3, Speed Lv. 2) stands out for its stat spread. Crit Lv. 3 is among the highest in the game, and it ships with three abyss gears: Gale II, Destruction I, and Insight I. Gale II is a rare upgrade over the standard Gale I, giving it a noticeable attack speed advantage. Find it inside a cave near the Nightfell Expedition Camp in Demeniss Ancestors’ Ruins.
Ignir (Two-Handed, ATK 24, Crit Lv. 1) is a strong automatic pickup after completing Chapter 7. No exploration required. It comes with Destruction I (appearing twice) and Insight I. The ATK is high at 24, but the passive-only abyss gears keep it below S tier compared to weapons with active abilities.
Darkbringer (Two-Handed, ATK 22, Crit Lv. 3) comes with Ator’s Orb, a unique active abyss gear that summons an orb attack. Combined with Gale I and Insight I, it offers both burst damage and good crit potential. Find it lodged in the teeth of a giant skeleton at the White Wastes Sanctuary, northwest of Five-Finger Mountain in Pailune. No boss fight needed, just exploration.
Tauria Curved Sword (One-Handed, ATK 15, Speed Lv. 1) has a low attack stat, but Crow’s Pursuit more than compensates. This abyss gear summons a murder of crows that attack nearby enemies every time you land a Heavy Attack, providing consistent crowd damage. It also comes with Gale I and Wind Slash. You earn it by defeating Crowcaller at the end of Chapter 5. The Crow’s Pursuit abyss gear alone makes this weapon worth using well past the point where its base stats fall off.
Survivor’s Solitude (One-Handed, ATK 21, Crit Lv. 1, Speed Lv. 1) is a strong passive stat stick with Swift I, Insight I, and Destruction I. No flashy active gears, but ATK 21 is the second-highest for one-handed weapons and the triple passive package covers all the fundamentals. Find it in a treasure chest in Death’s Grip Cavern behind a waterfall, northwest of Lake Kharonso in Hernand.
Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow (Ranged, ATK 19, Crit Lv. 1) is the strongest unique bow. Life Transference restores health on hit, giving ranged builds the sustain they otherwise lack. It also comes with Insight I and Destruction II, the upgraded version of the standard attack boost. Find it in the Pailune Ancestors’ Ruins through a moss-covered tunnel.
B-Tier Unique Weapons
B-tier weapons are solid options that fill specific roles or serve well during the early-to-mid game. They are worth grabbing if you find them, but they get outclassed by S and A-tier weapons in endgame content.
Acria Sword (One-Handed, ATK 20, Crit Lv. 2) has good stats but no standout abyss gear. Solve the music box puzzle in Stellen Manor to unlock it. Solid filler until you reach Fated Shadow.
Hwando (Two-Handed, ATK 19, Crit Lv. 1) is the go-to early greatsword. Three abyss gears (Insight I, Stamina Transference, Destruction I) make it a complete package for early chapters. Grab it from a side building near Lioncrest Manor. You need a key that costs 30 coins from a nearby vendor.
Melted Ambition (One-Handed, ATK 17, Speed Lv. 2) has Groundsurge, a ground-based AoE active gear. You get it after defeating Myurdin in the Decisive Battle quest during Chapter 7. Groundsurge is situationally strong against grouped enemies.
Wolf’s Fang (One-Handed, ATK 18, Speed Lv. 2) provides +4.0% damage to mighty foes. Niche, but that boss damage bonus stacks with other offensive gears. Find it at Jian’s altar during the Podium of Resolve quest in Chapter 7.
Hound (Two-Handed, ATK 17, Crit Lv. 3) has Hound’s Claws, an active abyss gear, plus Destruction I and Swift I. Drops from defeating Hemon Beindel. The high Crit Lv. 3 makes it a decent crit build weapon despite the lower attack stat.
Hollow Visage (One-Handed, ATK 17, Crit Lv. 1, Speed Lv. 2) comes with Insight I, Gale I, and Destruction I. Three passive gears covering crit, speed, and attack. Find it in a treasure chest behind a waterfall inside Dawn Cave in the Mountain of Frozen Souls, southern Hernand. A reliable early grab.
Noble Man’s Bow (Ranged, ATK 18, Crit Lv. 1) has Destruction I, Malicebane I, and Insight I. Malicebane I provides +4.0% damage to mighty foes, making this a boss-focused ranged option. Outclassed by Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow for general use, but the boss damage is niche-valuable.
Mining Knuckledrill (Specialty, ATK 22, Crit Lv. 3) has a surprisingly high attack stat and comes with +10% mining chance. A viable combat weapon that doubles as an exploration tool. Drops from defeating Excavatron during the Stolen Quarry faction quest.
C-Tier Unique Weapons
C-tier weapons are outclassed by higher-tier options but may still be worth picking up to extract their abyss gears. Some fill early-game gaps before better alternatives become available.
| Weapon | Type | ATK | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword of the Lord | One-Handed | 13 | Wind Slash is a decent active gear, but ATK 13 is too low. Grab it from defeating Kailok in Chapter 2, extract Wind Slash, move on. |
| The Grove’s Thorn | One-Handed | 17 | Only one abyss gear (Spirit Transference). Drops from Kearush the Slayer in Chapter 5. Spirit Transference is better sourced elsewhere. |
| Frostfang | Two-Handed | 16 | ATK 16 is low for two-handed. Spirit Transference and Swift I are fine but don’t compensate. Drops from Gwen Kraber in Roothold. |
| Goblin King’s Treasure Dagger | Dagger | 16 | Crit Rate Lv. 5 is the highest in the game for a single weapon, but daggers are stealth tools with limited open-combat viability. Treasure chest under Mudridge Cabin in Pororin Forest. |
| Sior Blaster | Ranged | 13 | Low ATK. Energy Drain I and Insight I are passable. Treasure chest in Bowsprit Cape. Skip unless you need an early ranged option. |
| Silverwolf Axe | One-Handed | 18 | No abyss gears. Oongka’s starting weapon after Chapter 7. Decent stats but nothing special without gears. |
| Kylus Dagger | Dagger | 14 | Fast (Speed Lv. 3) but weak. NPC gift after defeating the Staglord. Same dagger limitations as Goblin King’s Treasure Dagger. |
Shields Ranked
Shields are ranked separately because they serve a defensive role. Defense stat matters most, followed by attached abyss gears and secondary stats like movement speed. Shields have a maximum of 2 abyss gear sockets.
| Tier | Shield | DEF | Abyss Gears | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | Shield of Conviction | 8 | Aegis I, Fortitude I | Treasure chest in bell tower, Church of Calphade (Hernand) |
| A | Rhonid Large Shield | 7 | Speed Lv. 1 | Ground floor chest at Lioncrest Manor |
| A | Staglord’s Shield | 6 | Fortification I, Aegis I | Defeat Saigord the Staglord (Lord Amidst the Ruins quest) |
| B | Shield of Betrayal | 6 | Aegis I, Fortitude I | Defeat Cassius Morten (The Unyielding Shields, Chapter 6) |
| B | Shield of Sacrifice | 6 | None | Sea cave southeast of abandoned seaside cabin |
| C | Shield of Radiance | 5 | Move Speed Lv. 3 | Hidden hole north of Verdant Paradise |
| C | Mirror of the Night | 5 | Move Speed Lv. 2 | Sanctum of Atonement |
Shield of Conviction is the clear winner with DEF 8, the highest of any shield. Aegis I (Damage Reduction 1.0) and Fortitude I (Guard Stamina Cost -3.0%) reinforce the defensive role. Rhonid Large Shield at DEF 7 is a close second and available early from Lioncrest Manor. Staglord’s Shield sits in A tier thanks to Fortification I (Defense +3) stacking with its base defense. For boss fight strategies where shields are critical, check our Crimson Desert boss guide.
Abyss Gear Tier List
Abyss gears are modular upgrades you socket into weapons and armor at a Witch. Every piece of equipment has a maximum socket count: two-handed and ranged weapons hold 5, one-handed weapons hold 3, torso armor holds 3, gloves and boots hold 2 each, head armor holds 1, and shields hold 2. You can extract gears from any weapon and re-socket them elsewhere with no penalty, which is why this list ranks gears independently from the weapons they come on.
Socket costs scale from 5 Silver for the first slot to 40 Silver for the fifth, totaling 105 Silver to max out a weapon. Upgrades unlock after Chapter 5 when you meet the Witch of Wisdom. As of July 2026, these rankings hold through Patch 1.13: neither 1.10 nor 1.13 changed gear or weapon balance. Two additions are worth knowing, though. Patch 1.13 opened the Abyss to Oongka and Damiane, so abyss gear farming now matters for all three characters, and 1.10’s Pinball and Orb Roll minigames at the Delesyian Institute added a fresh source of Abyss Artifacts and artifact chests. For a full breakdown of the skill system that complements abyss gear builds, see our Crimson Desert best skills guide.

S-Tier Abyss Gears
S-tier gears are active effects that transform your combat output. They trigger automatically during specific actions and scale into endgame without losing effectiveness.
Greysoul Howling adds phantom strikes to your Turning Slash, effectively multiplying its damage. Found exclusively on the Fated Shadow. This single abyss gear is the primary reason Fated Shadow sits at S tier. Pair it with Momentum for an even larger Turning Slash damage spike.
Momentum provides a flat +35% damage boost to Turning Slash. Unlike most active gears that socket into weapons, Momentum goes into an armor slot, which means you can run it alongside weapon-based active gears. Stacking Momentum with Greysoul Howling on Fated Shadow creates the highest single-ability damage output in the game. Find it in a chest at the Sanctum of Benediction in Hernand, inside the Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom container.
Crow’s Pursuit summons a murder of crows to attack nearby enemies every time you land a Heavy Attack. The crows deal consistent damage and work as crowd control, chipping away at surrounding enemies while you focus on a primary target. Originally found on the Tauria Curved Sword from defeating Crowcaller in Chapter 5. You can extract it and socket it into any melee weapon.
Wound of Darkness enhances your attacks with dark energy that deals AoE damage to nearby enemies. Found on Vessel of Dark Pursuit from the Sanctum of Absolution. Strong for both single-target and crowd-clearing scenarios.
Ator’s Orb summons a special orb attack that hits enemies in a targeted area. Found exclusively on Darkbringer from the White Wastes Sanctuary. The orb provides burst damage on demand, making it strong for both boss fights and mob clearing.
A-Tier Abyss Gears
A-tier gears are either strong active abilities with more limited applications or sustain tools that keep you alive during extended fights.
Spirit Transference and Stamina Transference siphon spirit and stamina respectively every time you hit an enemy. These are the backbone of aggressive playstyles. Without them, you burn through resources and need to pause to regenerate. Spirit Transference is found on The Grove’s Thorn (Kearush drop, Chapter 5) and Frostfang (Gwen Kraber drop). Stamina Transference is on Hwando (Lioncrest Manor) and Frozen Anguish (Spire of Frost). Both are extractable and worth socketing into whatever weapon you main.
Gourmet III boosts your healing from food by roughly 15%. Food is your primary healing during boss fights, so this translates directly to survivability. It is the highest tier version of the Gourmet gear, earned through the Animal Meat Life Challenge by collecting all meat types from the Butchery vendor. Gourmet III goes in an armor slot.
Life Transference restores health on hit. Found on the Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow. Ranged builds lack other sustain options, which makes Life Transference almost mandatory for bow-focused characters.
Groundsurge fires a ground-based AoE attack. Found on Melted Ambition (Myurdin drop, Chapter 7). Good against grouped enemies but less impactful against single targets.
Wind Slash sends a blade of wind forward that cuts through enemies in a line. Found on the Sword of the Lord and Tauria Curved Sword. Solid ranged poke from melee range. Extract it from the Sword of the Lord and put it on something with higher ATK.
Hound’s Claws is an enhanced attack modifier from the Hound greatsword (Hemon Beindel drop). It provides a burst window that pairs well with high-crit builds since Hound already has Crit Lv. 3.
B-Tier Abyss Gears
B-tier includes upgraded passive stat boosts and situational active abilities. These are good slot-fillers after you have your S and A-tier gears in place.
Destruction II (Attack +2) and Gale II (Attack Speed Lv. 2) are upgraded versions of their Lv. 1 counterparts. Worth socketing into any remaining slots after your active gears are placed. Rampaging Insight (Crit +10) is a strong crit boost for builds that stack critical rate. Malicebane I (+4.0% damage to mighty foes) is niche but valuable for boss-heavy content.
The active gears in B tier, including Orbs of Lightning, Ancient Retribution, Howling of Chaos, and Slashing Reeds, are functional but less impactful than S-tier actives. Howling of Chaos stands out for applying Confusion, which is useful for crowd control. Slashing Reeds is an armor-slot active, letting you run it alongside weapon-based gears.
Infinite Arrows I removes arrow management for bow builds by providing arrow replenishment. Earned from the Bow Aimed at Fate I challenge (defeat 5 enemies with a bow in 60 seconds). An upgraded version, Greater Infinite Arrows, drops from the Bow Aimed at Fate V challenge (take down 5 enemies at once from 20+ meters). If you run a bow-focused build, this is one of the first abyss gears you should chase since ammo management is a constant drag on ranged play otherwise.
Fortification I (Defense +3) deserves special mention. It stacks across all equipped armor and shield slots. Loading Fortification I into every available armor socket creates a noticeable defense increase. It is one of the most efficient ways to build tankiness, especially for sword-and-shield players.
C-Tier Abyss Gears
C-tier gears are the Lv. 1 basics that fill empty sockets when you have nothing better. They are not bad, but they are replaceable. Destruction I, Insight I, Gale I, and Swift I provide small stat bumps and appear on most unique weapons by default. Use them as placeholders until you earn higher-tier versions or active gears from later chapters. If you need a fast supply of Destruction I and Insight I cores, our abyss core farming guide covers a repeatable method at Root’s End Ruins. Once you have more cores than you can socket, feed the extras into special synthesis for a chance at higher-tier results. Note that Greater-tier gears have durability and break after enough use, so many players prefer Tier III versions which are permanent.
Defensive options like Aegis I (Damage Reduction 1.0) and Fortitude I (Guard Stamina -3.0%) are functional but only relevant for shield builds. Utility gears like Fortune I (+10% Silver) and Aptitude I (+10% Skill EXP) are useful for farming but do nothing in combat. Swap them out before boss fights.
Best Weapon and Abyss Gear Combos
The weapon-gear combinations below maximize damage output for different playstyles. Two-handed weapons hold 5 abyss gear sockets and one-handed weapons hold 3, so two-handed builds have more room for customization. For complete slot-by-slot loadouts on the three most-asked-about weapons, our guide to the best abyss gear for Darkbringer, Frozen Anguish, and Vessel of Dark Pursuit goes deeper than the summaries here.
Maximum Turning Slash Damage (One-Handed)
Weapon: Fated Shadow (Greysoul Howling built-in). Armor: Momentum in torso slot. Fill remaining weapon sockets with Destruction II and Gale II. This combo stacks Greysoul Howling’s phantom strikes with Momentum’s +35% Turning Slash damage for the highest burst potential in the game. Pair with dual-wielding for maximum combo extension.
Sustained Two-Handed Aggression
Weapon: Frozen Anguish or Soul Spear. Socket Stamina Transference (if using Soul Spear) plus Crow’s Pursuit (extracted from Tauria Curved Sword) into the weapon. Fill remaining slots with Destruction II and Insight I. Armor: Gourmet III for healing sustain. This build keeps stamina topped off through Transference while Crow’s Pursuit handles nearby enemies passively.
Boss Killer
Weapon: Vessel of Dark Pursuit (Wound of Darkness built-in). Add Malicebane I (+4% mighty foe damage) and Destruction II. Armor: Momentum in torso, Fortification I stacked across remaining armor slots for survivability. Wound of Darkness provides consistent AoE pressure during boss fights while Malicebane amplifies all damage against the target.
Ranged Build
Weapon: Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow (Life Transference built-in). Bows hold 5 sockets, so fill them with Greater Infinite Arrows (no ammo management), Destruction II, Gale II, and Rampaging Insight for maximum crit and damage at range. Life Transference keeps you healthy without needing to enter melee range. Armor: Gourmet III for food healing between engagements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you extract abyss gears from unique weapons?
Yes. Visit any Witch and select “Extract” to remove abyss gears from unique weapons with no penalty. You can then re-socket them into any compatible equipment. This means a C-tier weapon with a strong abyss gear is still worth grabbing for the gear alone.
What is the strongest weapon in Crimson Desert?
Soul Spear has the highest raw attack stat at 27. Fated Shadow (ATK 25) is the strongest one-handed weapon thanks to Greysoul Howling, which adds phantom strikes to Turning Slash. For overall combat effectiveness, Fated Shadow with Momentum stacked in armor provides the highest burst damage in the game.
How many abyss gear sockets can each equipment type hold?
Two-handed and ranged weapons hold 5 sockets. One-handed weapons hold 3. Torso armor holds 3. Gloves and boots hold 2 each. Head armor holds 1. Shields hold 2. Cloaks, rings, earrings, and necklaces cannot have sockets.
When do abyss gear upgrades unlock?
Abyss gear upgrading unlocks in Chapter 5 during the “Witch of Wisdom” questline. Before that, you can only socket and extract gears at the Hermit Witch from Chapter 3, but you cannot upgrade their tiers.
What are the best early-game unique weapons?
Hwando (ATK 19, three abyss gears) from Lioncrest Manor, Darkbringer (ATK 22, three abyss gears) from the White Wastes Sanctuary, and Frozen Anguish (ATK 25, three abyss gears) from the Spire of Frost are all available before Chapter 5 through exploration. Frozen Anguish in particular rivals endgame weapons.

Summary
Fated Shadow and Soul Spear lead the unique weapons tier list thanks to their combination of high attack stats and powerful active abyss gears. For two-handed builds, Frozen Anguish and Vessel of Dark Pursuit compete for the top slot depending on whether you value sustain or AoE damage. Tauria Curved Sword punches above its weight class because Crow’s Pursuit is one of the strongest active gears in the game regardless of what weapon it sits on.
On the abyss gear side, Greysoul Howling and Momentum form the strongest combo when stacked together on a Turning Slash build. Stamina Transference and Spirit Transference are mandatory for aggressive playstyles, and Gourmet III provides the most reliable healing boost for boss encounters. Prioritize active gears in your weapon sockets and use C-tier passives as placeholders until you find upgrades.
