World of Warcraft: Midnight just launched, and it might be the most feature-packed expansion Blizzard has shipped in years. Player housing, a brand new Demon Hunter spec, rebuilt Quel’Thalas, a solo hunting system, and 40 revamped talent trees all hit at once. Whether you’re a returning veteran or jumping in fresh, here’s what to focus on during launch week and what can wait.
TL;DR
- Pick your professions immediately – Knowledge is time-gated and permanent. Every week you delay puts you behind.
- Complete the campaign first – It unlocks every major system (Housing, Prey, Renown, zone events).
- Claim your house early – Visit a Neighborhood and grab a plot. No lottery, no cost, no upkeep.
- Start the Prey system at level 90 – Visit Murder Row in Silvermoon for contracts. Do 4 hunts per week for max rewards.
- Log into your alts – Park them at an inn or city to start banking rested XP right now.
- Complete all 4 zone events before weekly reset – Silvermoon Court, Abundance, Legends of the Haranir, Stormarion Assault.
- Season 1 opens March 17 – Raids and Mythic dungeons unlock then. Mythic+ keystones follow March 24.
What’s New in Midnight
Midnight is the second chapter of the Worldsoul Saga, and it rebuilds the blood elf homeland from scratch. Here’s every major system you need to know about. We covered the initial reveals in our Blizzard Showcase 2026 roundup, but a lot has changed since then.
Four New Zones
Eversong Woods merges the original zone, Ghostlands, and Isle of Quel’Danas into one massive area. The Scourge damage has healed, but Void forces, Lightbloom overgrowth, and Amani trolls have filled the gap. Zul’Aman expands the classic TBC raid into a full questing zone with four Loa temples and rebuilt Atal’Aman. Harandar is a primordial fungal jungle where World Tree roots converge, home to the new Haranir allied race. And Voidstorm is the hostile endgame zone ruled by Xal’atath, featuring low gravity, stormfields, and three Nexus Points.
Silvermoon City has been completely rebuilt as the expansion hub. About a third stays Horde-exclusive, with the rest open to both factions.
Devourer Demon Hunter
Demon Hunters get a third specialization. The Devourer is a mid-range DPS spec (around 25 yards, similar to Evoker range) that uses Void instead of Fel. It runs on Intellect, generates Fury through abilities like Consume and Soul Immolation, then dumps it into Void Ray or Collapsing Star. The big moment is Void Metamorphosis, which requires 50 Soul Fragments to activate. Void Elf Demon Hunters also unlock through a pre-expansion questline.
Player Housing
This is the feature players have requested for 20 years. Claim a plot in Founder’s Point (Alliance) or Razorwind Shores (Horde), decorate in Basic or Advanced mode, and share your house across your entire Warband. No lottery, no gold sink, no upkeep. Your house is yours. Public, guild, and charter neighborhoods are available, each holding around 50 plots. Monthly Endeavors bring your neighborhood together for collaborative activities.
Prey System
A solo-friendly outdoor hunting system. Accept contracts from Magister Astalor in Murder Row, track targets through world activities, deal with ambushes along the way, then summon and fight your prey. Three difficulties: Normal (open to help from others), Hard (Torment stacking 2% damage increase, death penalties), and Nightmare (solo only, 4% Torment stacks, exclusive affixes). First 4 hunts per week grant 1,000 Journey points each. This feeds into gear progression, cosmetics, and the Preyseeker’s Journey seasonal track.
Apex Talents and Level 90
The level cap jumps from 80 to 90. You get 10 new talent points: 3 in Class, 3 in Hero (a new fourth lane), and 4 in your Specialization tree through the new Apex Talent system. Apex Talents are powerful capstones at the bottom of every spec’s tree, unlocking in 4 pips at levels 81, 84, 87, and 90. All 40 specializations have unique Apex nodes.
Everything Else
The transmog system is now slot-based. Assign appearances to armor slots and save full outfits to your action bar. Professions dropped from 3 quality tiers to 2 (Silver and Gold) and replaced RNG recipe discovery with direct purchases using Artisan’s Moxie. The UI now includes built-in damage meters, boss ability timelines, and a Journeys tab that centralizes Renown, Delves, Prey, and Great Vault progress. There’s a stat squish too. Item levels now range from about 150-250, with max ilvl at 289.
Choosing Your Class
If you’re brand new to WoW, Hunter is the safest pick. Your pet tanks while you learn, and the rotation is forgiving. Paladin (Retribution) offers strong self-healing with decent damage, and you can swap to tank or healer later. Blood Death Knight is practically immortal in solo content, though the playstyle is slower.
Interested in the new Devourer spec? You’ll need an existing Demon Hunter (or roll one first). The Devourer plays at mid-range with Void abilities, which feels different from the melee-focused Havoc and Vengeance specs. It’s a fun spec but not the simplest starting point.
The Haranir allied race unlocks during the Harandar zone campaign. They’re available for 9 classes (no DK, DH, or Evoker) and come with unique bioluminescent customization and original Druid forms if that’s your thing.
⚡ Quick tip: Midnight includes a Single-Button Combat Assistant and Assisted Highlights that visually show your next recommended ability. These make learning any class much easier than in previous expansions. You’ll find them in the UI settings.
One more thing: don’t use the level boost on your first character. Leveling teaches you your abilities in order, and you’ll understand your rotation much better than if you boost straight to max and get hit with 30 buttons at once.
WoW Midnight Beginner Guide: Week 1 Priorities
Launch week is overwhelming. Every system opens at once, and the FOMO hits hard. Here’s the priority order that matters:
1. Pick Your Professions Immediately
Don’t wait until max level. Profession Knowledge in Midnight is time-gated and permanent. Every Knowledge Point you miss in week 1 is a point you’ll never catch up on. The Knowledge tree now requires 50 points to max out (down from 90 in The War Within), but the time-gating means starting early is still mandatory. Bonus: selling crafting materials during launch week is the best gold opportunity you’ll get all expansion.
2. Complete the Campaign
The main story takes you through all four zones and unlocks Housing, Renown factions, zone events, and the Prey system. Focus on purple/campaign quests first. Side quests are fine to grab along the way, but the campaign gates are what matter. Expect roughly 8-10 hours to hit level 90 if you’re efficient.
3. Claim Your House
Once Housing unlocks, visit a Neighborhood and grab a plot. There’s no rush in terms of availability (new instances generate as they fill), but getting your house early means you can start collecting decor from dungeons, quests, and professions right away. Houses are Warband-wide, so you only need one.
4. Complete All 4 Zone Events
Before the first weekly reset, hit all four zone events: Silvermoon Court (choose a subfaction: Blood Knights, Farstriders, Magisters, or Shades of the Row), Abundance (profession-themed treasure gathering in Zul’Aman), Legends of the Haranir (magical painting scenarios in Harandar), and Stormarion Assault (wave defense in Voidstorm). These feed Renown and award Apex Caches.
5. Start the Prey System
At level 90, visit Magister Astalor Bloodsworn in Murder Row, Silvermoon. Complete the short unlock quest, then accept your first contracts. Do 4 hunts per week (one per zone) for maximum Journey points (1,000 each). After that, additional hunts only grant 50 points. Prey rewards Hero-track gear, Dawncrests, Coffer Key shards, and seasonal cosmetics.
6. Start Renown + Log Your Alts
Pick up Lady Liadrin’s weeklies (Unity Against the Void + reputation quest) for Apex Cache rewards and Bountiful Keys. Start working on Renown with all five factions. And log every alt character into an inn or capital city to start banking rested XP. You’ll thank yourself when you level them later.
Essential Tips
Get an MMO Mouse
WoW has a lot of keybinds. An MMO mouse with side buttons changes how you play. The Razer Naga V2 Pro is the gold standard with its swappable 2/6/12 button side plates, and the Corsair Scimitar Elite Wireless is a strong alternative with an adjustable sliding side panel for better thumb ergonomics. Either one makes keybinding your abilities, targeting macros, and consumables significantly easier.
The Naga V2 Pro comes with three interchangeable side plates (2, 6, or 12 buttons), so you can switch between MMO, MOBA, and FPS configurations. For WoW, the 12-button plate gives you instant access to an entire action bar under your thumb.
Warbands Save You Real Time
If you play multiple characters, Warbands are a game changer. Shared Renown, shared bank, shared achievements, shared transmog appearances. You don’t have to re-grind reputation on every alt anymore. This system works across both factions, so your Horde and Alliance characters all benefit from the same progression.
Use the Built-In UI Tools
Midnight ships with built-in damage meters, boss ability timelines, and a cooldown manager. You don’t need to install Details, DBM, or WeakAuras to be effective anymore. The Journeys tab in the Adventure Guide centralizes your Renown, Delves, Prey, and Great Vault progress in one place. Check it often.
Skyriding Works on Most Mounts Now
If you last played before Dragonflight, Skyriding (formerly Dragonriding) is the updated flying system. It works on most flying mounts now, not just dragon mounts. Six shared charges for Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent let you move through zones fast. It feels great once you get used to the momentum-based movement.
Delves Are Perfect for Solo Players
If you don’t raid or run Mythic+, Delves are your primary gear path. These are bite-sized dungeon runs (solo or small group) with your companion Valeera Sanguinar. Midnight has 12 Delves across all four zones, and Bountiful Delves (the rewarding version) unlock with Season 1 on March 17. Start farming Coffer Key Shards from World Quests now so you’re ready.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Skipping professions at launch. This is the biggest one. Profession Knowledge compounds over the entire expansion. Delaying by even one week creates a permanent gap you can’t close. Pick two professions at level 80 and start earning Knowledge Points immediately.
Boosting your first character. The level boost drops you at max level with a full action bar of abilities you don’t understand. Level naturally so you learn your class one ability at a time.
Trying to do everything before the campaign. It’s tempting to explore Housing, run dungeons, or chase zone events as soon as you can. But the campaign unlocks most systems and sends you through each zone’s content efficiently. Finish it first, then branch out.
Ignoring your Silvermoon subfaction choice. You pick one per week (Blood Knights, Farstriders, Magisters, or Shades of the Row), and each grants unique currency for exclusive cosmetics, recipes, and housing items. Don’t let a weekly reset pass without choosing.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does WoW Midnight Season 1 start?
Season 1 begins the week of March 17, 2026. This is when The Voidspire and Dreamrift raids open, along with Mythic dungeons and Bountiful Delves. Mythic+ keystones unlock the following week, March 24.
Can I do Housing solo?
Yes. Housing is fully solo-friendly. You claim a plot, decorate in Basic or Advanced mode, and earn decor from all types of content. Houses are Warband-wide, so all your characters share the same home. You can join public, guild, or charter neighborhoods.
Do I need addons for WoW Midnight?
Not really. Midnight includes built-in damage meters, boss ability timelines, a cooldown manager, and the Single-Button Combat Assistant. These cover what most players used Details, DBM, and WeakAuras for. Power users will still want addons, but they’re no longer required to be effective.
What is the max level in WoW Midnight?
Level 90. You start the expansion at level 80 (after completing The War Within content or the catch-up experience) and level through Midnight’s four zones. Apex Talents unlock progressively at levels 81, 84, 87, and 90.
Is WoW Midnight worth it for returning players?
If you bounced off WoW in the past, Midnight is one of the better re-entry points. There’s a dedicated catch-up experience in the Arathi Highlands, a condensed War Within story recap, Warbands for account-wide progression, and systems like Housing and Prey that don’t require a guild or group. The built-in UI improvements also mean you don’t need a folder full of addons to play effectively.
Summary
WoW Midnight is dense, but the priority order is clear: professions first, campaign second, everything else after. Housing, Prey, and Renown are the three progression systems that define this expansion. Get into them early, do your weeklies, and you’ll be in great shape when Season 1 raids and Mythic+ open on March 17. If you’re looking to gear up your desk for the long sessions ahead, check out the Razer Naga V2 Pro or the HyperX Cloud III for a headset that won’t cook your ears during a 6-hour raid night.
